Horseshoe Meadow Cow Cabin
Thomas Hghberger writes
This is the old “Horseshoe Meadow” Cow Cabin located in the upper West end of the the meadow close to the Cottonwood Pass trail (old Hockett Trail). The cabin had been abandoned for quite some time and the District decided to re roof and repair the structure for use as a patrol cabin and snow survey shelter. So in 1975’ my crew of Wilderness Ranger went into the site and performed the needed repairs. I packed in the materials with our District pack mules. We re-hung the original door, replaced placed the windows, re-shingled the roof, beefed up the foundation and and placed new chinking between the logs. I also packed in a nice old “sheepherders” stove I picked up from the Beach Meadows GS on the Sequoia NF. Spent a few nights in the cabin over the years. I was up there 2 summers ago, the stove was gone and the place was in poor shape! Too bad the Forest Service let her go!
To add a few notes of history, this Kern Plateau area was a major summer grazing area in earlier times, each grazing allotment had authorized Cattle Permittees that ran their cattle and were required to move and manage the cattle to better utilize the forage! Cow Cabins or line shacks were constructed throughout the range so the cowman and or herder could better manage the herd. Line Camps were located in this region at Horseshoe Meadows, Big Whitney Meadows, Little Whitney Meadows, Mulkey Meadows, Templeton Meadows, Brown Meadow, and several in the Monache Meadows area. The Cottonwood Pass trail that runs next to the Horseshoe Cabin is the old Hockett Trail. The trail was specifically constructed to link the Westside of the Sierra foothills so that stockman could drive their cattle to the Owens Valley! Before the Horseshoe Meadow Road was constructed, the Hockett Trail continued past Horseshoe Meadows down to Carrol Creek which is the start of HSM road today!
Hank Levine writes:
My wife's first husband, Peter Gable, was a ranger up there in the early 80's and used the cabin a lot. A bear tore through the roof one winter, I think in the late 80's. The door disappeared a few years ago. It is sad to see what has happened to the cabin in the last few years. |
